Karla again!
Wow! This has been a long, full and wonderful day. I sit here at almost midnight and there’s just so much to tell!! There will be some new pictures up on the site… (click here to see easily) but not as many as usual because there are certain places we are visiting where we have been asked to not photograph. So, I will try to write so well that you will get a mental picture. Ha!
We have just finished our debriefing for the day. This team is so content. Brent’s quote to the team tonight was: “It seems like God is extending the days…I guess coming out of the ‘sun stand still’ sermon series makes me think that God might actually be doing this for us! I see you all doing whatever you are asked to do. Everyone is jumping in and so willing. I appreciate that.”
So…today was as follows:
1. Visits into the townships: Mitchell and I were paired with a group of care workers and sent to the township called ‘Iraq’. I did take video of this adventure and will try to attach it to the blog. It was quite moving as we went from shack to shack ministering to the people. Regan and Holley went out individually with care givers and were overwhelmed by seeing the face of Jesus everywhere. Our God is the Defender of the widow and Fighter for the orphans. He is the God of the broken and Friend of the weak. We observed this today in a way like we hadn’t before.
2. Land clearing/organization project: Brent (Lover of the Weed Eater), Mark (Picture Poser Worker), Amanda (Most Flexible/Content Mission Tripper Ever), and Tom (Wise Sage and Lover of Prayer) worked hard clearing out an area we were asked to organize for construction materials. When given this task on Monday, we thought it would take 3 days to complete. Well, this Fantastic 4 knocked it out in a morning. Pictures to prove it! They did come upon a snake however, Brent found it, Mark corralled it and Tom chopped it’s head off = teamwork!
3. And, painting…What servants hearts: “Even when outside painting, I could hear the kids inside laughing— it reminded me that even though what we are doing may seem simple, it brings dignity and value to these kids. We should care for their facility like it’s the house of Jesus.”
4. Caleb worked hard today ministering to the children at the VOH. He has made many friends. Even one of the care workers told me today, “Is that your boy? Caleb? Ah…I like what I see in him. He is a good boy. So wonderful with the kids.” Then this proud mom smiled from ear to ear! The team appreciates Caleb’s attitude to do what he is able to do, even though he longs to do all the ‘manly manual labor’. He is being super flexible.
5. Sports clinics: Tom joined the outing today and assisted in leading out in a Net Ball game with the township kids. All smiles, he photographed, prayed, ministered, encouraged and spoke life over these kids. He says, “Knowing the impact that the sports clinics have for the kingdom of God…it’s encouraging!”
6. Service at ThembaCare Grabouw. Amanda, Holley, Aaron, Mark and I gathered at the clinic with the care workers and volunteers for a time of encouragement. The “roof lifted” as the ladies lead us in worship. No instruments, no lights, no screens with words…just hearts ready to meet with Jesus (and singing voices that were quite incredible, I might add). The presence of God was so tangible that I became overwhelmed to tears. I then shared from Mark 2- Jesus, The Friends, and The Paralytic. I see these careworkers as friends who are “making an opening” for the people they serve in the townships. They are hands of healing in their community. And I then encouraged their hearts with the gospel and Christ’s hands of healing towards them as He “makes an opening” for us, the paralytics in desperate need of a Savior. It was a precious time of worship and the Word, one I will never forget.
Tomorrow is a new day! One that has us once again ‘scattered’ into different places: a tiling project, more township visits, a day visit with a VOH child to the Red Cross in Cape Town, and more!
Thanks for praying. We are so grateful.
Love,
KG
